Verna Iola (Mellegaard) Langerock was born on June 29, 1927 to Charley and Ruby (Howe) Mellegaard. She grew up on the family farm in the Spring Valley, South Dakota area surrounded by her loving brothers and a host of loving Danish aunts and uncles. She graduated from Parker High School in 1945.
Verna met, fell in love with and then married Glen Langerock on January 29, 1950. They spent the next 56 years farming and raising their family in the Marion area. They were faithful members of the Calvary Reformed Church in Monroe, SD their entire adult lives. Glen preceded Verna to heaven in 2006, and she continued to thrive when moving to the Senior Apartments in Marion. She filled her time with family and a multitude of friends. No one ever left her home without a full stomach, rich conversation or an opportunity to play a hand or two of Pinochle or Pitch. Verna never turned down a chance to try new things, go somewhere new, or meet and welcome new people into her life. She was blessed with so many family and friends who would drop by to bring a tomato or spend a few minutes visiting. These small acts of kindness enriched her days and gave her such joy.
Verna’s family was her greatest joy. Grateful for having shared her life are four children: Keith Langerock, who preceded her in death (2001) and awaits her in heaven; Connie (Jeff) Lorenz; Donna Langerock; Arlyn (Denise) Langerock; and her daughter-in-law Georgie (Steve) Smith. Ten grandchildren: Cory (Julie) Langerock; Scott (Eve) Langerock; Nicholas (Abbie) Langerock; Jeffrey Lorenz, II; Jennifer Samantha (Patrick) Moore; Kathryn Lorenz; Sara Jo (Rodney) Grandorff; Justin Garry; Rebecca (Chris) Meier; Jessica Langerock, and 14 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Matthew and Daniel Langerock; Maddie and Riggins Langerock; Dylan, Emma and Luke Langerock; Jocelyn and Eliza Grandorff; Audrina, Harper, Kenrick and Kolt Meier.
