Paul L. Massey, 93, of Freeman, SD passed away peacefully at the Freeman Nursing Home on January 2, 2026. He was born in Milliken, CO on August 12, 1932. He is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Ruby Massey, step-mother Dorothy, wife Liz, brother Don, sister Shirley (Deckert), son Greg and ex-wife Sally (Kleinsasser).
He spent his early childhood in Johnstown, CO and then the family moved to Freeman. He graduated from Freeman High School and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in journalism at SDSU. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and was stationed in San Diego, CA, He was honorably discharged in 1960. He then had a long-time career in the newspaper business, ending at The New Mexican in Santa Fe, NM. After retirement he moved to Avon, SD and enjoyed rural-life on the farm with his sister-in-law, Adella Massey.
He liked going to sporting events, travelling (RV’ing), fishing, watching classic westerns on TV, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by 7 children and 1 grandchild: Randall (Dana), Ann, Becky (John), John, Susan (Kris), Amy and David (Kristine and Miles); step-daughter Lynda, sister Sally (Bob) Gimbel and brother Keith (Karen), along with many nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be handled by Walter Funeral Home in Freeman. Service and interment to be arranged at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
