Life Sketch written by Lucille G Hofer

I, Lucille Grace Glanzer Hofer was born February 26, 1940, to Jacob H. and Lavina (Wollman) Glanzer, on a farm south of Bridgewater, South Dakota. I graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1958. I then attended Freeman Junior College and received an Associate of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. I taught country school for 3 years in the Dolton area.

Upon my profession of faith, I was baptized on August 3, 1948, by Rev. David W. Tschetter. I became a member of the Salem Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Church. After I was married, I joined the Zion Mennonite Church of Bridgewater, where I remained a faithful member.

On July 3, 1960, I married Michael D. Hofer at Pioneer Hall in Freeman, South Dakota. We moved to Michael’s Great Grandfather’s homestead and began farming. I enjoyed working on the farm and helping Michael with the fieldwork, milking our dairy cows and doing chores. We enjoyed farming together for 47 years. We were blessed with one daughter, Kathy Marie, on May 25, 1966. I love all types of music. I sang in the Bridgewater Community Chorus for over 49 years. I enjoyed playing piano, organ, saxophone and various other instruments, and sang in different groups in church on many occasions. One of my greatest joys was teaching the adult Sunday School Class and Vacation Bible School. My hobbies included riding my motorcycle, traveling and reading. I had the privilege of reading thru the Bible 20 times in different translations. I served on the Bridgewater School Board for 10 years.

In 2005, I lost my eyesight. Because of this, I enjoyed listening to hundreds of books and the Bible, on tape. I valued the Bible verses that I had memorized and continued to memorize more.

On February 2, 2008, Michael passed away. Kathy and I continued to live on the farm. We both needed each other. Due to the loss of my eyesight, family, friends, and church family were gracious in providing transportation when needed. I enjoyed visiting on the phone with my many friends and family. Kathy was a great help with day-to-day activities.

On November 1, 2022, Kathy and I moved to the Grandview Assisted Living Apartments in Bridgewater. I enjoyed my new family of friends. On April 1, 2025, I moved to the Diamond Care Center. Kathy and I are deeply grateful for the incredible staff, whose compassion and tireless dedication provide such comfort and love to us.

Lucille passed away at the Diamond Care Center on January 21, 2026. She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Michael; her parents, Jacob H. and Lavina Glanzer; her parents-in-law Joe D. and Sarah Hofer; her brothers, Johnny Glanzer, Emanuel and Mary Glanzer, James Glanzer, Donald Glanzer; and her brother-in-law, Sam E.
