Gordon Gross

Gordon Gross, 92, of Freeman passed away on July 16th. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd at 11 am at Bethany Mennonite Church of Freeman. Burial will be held at 9:45 am, prior to the Memorial Service at the Freeman City Cemetery on July 22nd. Visitation and viewing will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, July 21st, at the church.

Gordon L. “Gordy” Gross

Gordon L. “Gordy” Gross, 92, of Freeman passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2026. He was born on April 22, 1934, on the family farm west of Freeman, to Jacob W. and Anna S. (Waldner) Gross.

Gordon received his elementary education at Apple Grove District #49 country school and then attended Freeman High School. He graduated in 1952, having achieved 12 years of perfect attendance.

Upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ, Gordon was baptized by Rev. Peter Stahl on November 18, 1952, and became a member of the Hutterdorf Mennonite Church of rural Freeman.

Gordon attended South Dakota State University in Brookings for one year and one quarter before returning to Freeman to farm with his father.

In June of 1956, he was inducted into the Army and took basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas. He began his service at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and also attended supply maintenance school. From there he spent the remainder of his tour of duty at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1958.

In June of 1958 Gordon transferred his membership to Bethany Mennonite of Freeman where he remained a faithful member for the remainder of his life. He served as Sunday School treasurer and was a member of the Men’s Chorus and Mixed Choir.

Following his retirement from farming, Gordon enjoyed employment as part of the Freeman Courier staff and working for Heritage Pharmacy in Freeman.

Gordon was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed cheering on and following all of the local teams and getting acquainted with the players.

Preceding Gordon in death and welcoming him in heaven are his parents, his sister Clara and her husbands Melvin Olander and Luverne Poppinga, his sister Bernice and her husband Alfred Wahl, his adopted sister Susie and her husband Paul S. Tschetter, an infant brother Norman, and his sister-in-law Irene Gross.

Gordon is survived by his brother Jake, as well as by nieces and nephews (including great-great-great nieces and nephews), cousins, and friends.

Interment will take place at 9:45 AM at the Freeman City Cemetery prior to the memorial service.

Undesignated memorials will be directed to Freeman Regional Health Services Foundation.
