In Memory of Eva Irene Goosen
Eva Irene (Becker) Goosen, 99, of Freeman, began her eternal life on August 17, 2025. Eva’s earthly life began on September 28, 1925, near Marion, SD, to Daniel and Anna (Tieszen) Becker. She attended Rosefield Township School No. 67, Freeman Academy, Freeman Junior College, and Yankton College where she received her elementary teaching degree. While attending Freeman Academy, Eva met the love of her life, Lowell Goosen, on the school bus, and the two were united in marriage on May 16, 1951. They had 2 sons, Lowayne Allen and Jerry Lee.
Eva loved teaching and spent her career teaching 4 years in country schools and 23 years in 4th grade at Marion School District. She frequently completed arts and crafts projects with her students as well as with her 5 granddaughters. When not at school, Eva spent her time on the farm gardening, canning, baking and helping Lowell milk the cows. Eva filled her free time with music, sports, crafts, sewing, and reading.
Eva loved the Lord her God. She showed her devotion through many hand-written prayers and volunteer hours at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church. She hung bulletin boards, planted flowers, and helped with Vacation Bible School. Her favorite role was serving on the Flower Committee.
Eva is survived by sons: Lowayne (Jacqueline) Goosen of Freeman, SD, and Dr. Jerry (Misty) Goosen of Olathe, KS.; granddaughters: Natalie (Justin) Diede of Redwood Falls, MN, Brooklyn Goosen of Tea, SD, Durell (Gerald) Cope of Olathe, KS, Chelsea (Isaiah) Jackson of Brookings, SD, and Brittany (Derek) Domino of Brookings, SD; great grandchildren: Charli and Pyper Cope, Wenly, Ezri, and Kingsley Jackson, and Everett, Elliott, and Harrison Domino; sister: Lily Schroeder of Edina, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Goosen; parents, Daniel and Anna Becker; brothers: Herbert Becker and Willard Becker; and sisters: Emma Schroeder, Amelia Epp, and Anna Mae Rudiger.
A visitation will take place at Walter Funeral Home on Friday, August 22, from 6pm to 7pm. A funeral service to celebrate Eva’s earthly life will be held at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church on Saturday, August 23, at 10am with Pastor Corey Miller officiating. Burial will take place at Salem-Zion Mennonite Cemetery immediately following the service followed by a lunch provided by the church.
